Four candidates remain in the running for Escambia County Schools superintendent, and the board is expected to vote Thursday to fill the position.
Andalusia High School Superintendent Daniel Shakespeare has withdrawn from consideration for Escambia County Schools superintendent.
Shakespeare was one of five candidates who interviewed earlier this month with the school board.
Board attorney Broox Garrett said four other candidates are still in the running - David Nolin, principal of A.C. Moore Elementary School in Atmore; Randall K. Little, assistant principal at W.S. Neal High School; Larry Collier, principal of Brookhaven Middle School in Decatur; and William &#8220Billy” Hines, administrative assistant to the county superintendent.
Current Superintendent Melvin &#8220Buck” Powell announced in January that he would retire as of July 1.
Garrett said he expects board members to discuss the candidates both in open session and in executive session.
In previous discussions for superintendent, Garrett said, the board has narrowed the field to two by vote and then chosen from those two candidates.
The five candidates who were interviewed April 10-11 were the only ones who applied for the job.
Among the issues they discussed with school board members during interviews were the No Child Left Behind Act, accreditation of schools, discipline methods, test scores and teacher training.
