T.R. Miller junior Baxley Raines went hitless in his only two at-bats, both infield groundouts, in Saturday's Alabama Lions Club East-West All-Star Series played at Jefferson Davis Community College.
The Brewton Area team downed the Jackson Area team 11-0 in Saturday's opening game. Andalusia's Johnny Jernigan, Foley's Brent Gillen and Robertsdale's Lance Baxter combined for a one-hit shutout.
The trio had a perfect game until there were two outs in the sixth inning when a routine throw from second base was dropped by the first baseman. The no-hitter was broken up when Leroy's Colin Etheridge led off the top of the seventh inning with a single. It was the only hit of the game for the Jackson Area. The game would have ended after six innings on the 10-run rule with the no-hitter still intact under normal high school rules.
The Mobile Area downed the Enterprise Area 7-0 in game two.
The top players from the first two games were selected for the final game. The combined Mobile/Enterprise Area beat the combined Brewton/Jackson Area 6-3.
Sixteen players were selected for the state tournament series to be played in Birmingham June 3. Those players include David Pulliam of Davidson, Chris Murrill of Theodore, Josh Dannelley, Brad Sheffield, Spence McDonald and Will Dannelly of Satsuma, Will Buford and Jake Overstreet of Thomasville, Chad Jordan of Charles Henderson, Rumiko Forrestor of Northview, Brent Gillen of Foley, Buck Buckelew of Daphne, Ryan Harrison and Corey Luckie of Fairhope, and Lance Baxter and Byron Williams of Robertsdale.
