Let's all support schools
Local school officials kicked off the school year with good news this week: All but one of the schools in Brewton and East Brewton achieved their academic goals set by the state in conjunction with the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
W.S. Neal High School met all but one of its Adequate Yearly Progress goals, and school officials said they will have plans in place to help boost the graduation rate next year.
We should all share in congratulating the schools for meeting their goals.
And with school starting again Thursday for both Brewton City Schools and Escambia County Schools, parents - and even the entire community - have a chance to help maintain that success again this year.
Parents can help by making their children's success in school a priority. That means checking on homework progress; meeting their teachers; and making sure students get to class on time.
Members of the community can help simply by supporting schools. One of the most important ways we can do that this year is by passing the renewal of a 4-mill tax for education in September.
The county will host a special election just for the tax, and it's important that our community show its support by renewing that funding source for schools.
Our schools are off to a great start this year, and they need our support. We wish this year's students good luck as they embark on a new year of learning - and we wish their teachers good luck as they continue their quest to reach academic goals.
