The Alabama Career/Technical Education Joint Leadership Development Conference was held Oct. 28 at the Birmingham Civic Center. Six students from the Escambia Brewton Career Technical Center and six students from Flomaton High School attended the conference. The conference is designed to develop leadership skills in youth enrolled in Career/Tech classes and Career/Tech youth organizations.
Students attended workshops on three tracks. The first tract focused on youth getting involved in civic and community service organizations. The American Cancer society, Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Muscular Dystrophy Assoc. and the March of Dimes presented programs to show students how to become involved in the various organizations. The second tract focused on officer duties and responsibilities. This tract also gave tips on conducting meetings, organizing and completing projects, business etiquette, and soft skills such as teamwork, oral and written communications, greeting and meeting people, and body language. The third track was presented by John Beede, author of several books on strategies for teen success. &#8220Climb On” was the basis for John's motivational presentation and workshop.
Students attending the conference from the Escambia Brewton Career Technical Center included: Ava Lucas, Ashley Condrey, and Lynn Anderson representing FBLA, Brittany Salter and Jessica York representing FCCLA, and Brittany Millstead representing HOSA. Students representing the FFA chapter at Flomaton High School included: Tara Brown, Jesse Ross, Justin Emmons, Ashley Bonds, Rocky Lee, and Meaghan Bourque. Mrs. Betty K. Clark, FBLA advisor, and Mrs. Jane Henderson, Career Technical Director for Escambia County, chaperoned the group. The bus driver was Mr. Gene Coleman, VICA advisor from EBCTC.
